Berry phase correction to electron density of states in solids.
Liouville's theorem on the conservation of phase-space volume is violated by Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons. This leads to a modification of the phase-space density of states, whose significance is discussed in a number of examples: field modification of the Fermi-sea volume, connection to the anomalous Hall effect, and a general formula for orbital magnetization. ...
متن کاملStoichiometric control of the density of states in PbS colloidal quantum dot solids
Colloidal quantum dots, and nanostructured semiconductors in general, carry the promise of overcoming the limitations of classical materials in chemical and physical properties and in processability. However, sufficient control of electronic properties, such as carrier concentration and carrier mobility, has not been achieved until now, limiting their application. In bulk semiconductors, modifi...
متن کاملUniversal Non-Debye Scaling in the Density of States of Amorphous Solids.
At the jamming transition, amorphous packings are known to display anomalous vibrational modes with a density of states (DOS) that remains constant at low frequency. The scaling of the DOS at higher packing fractions remains, however, unclear. One might expect to find a simple Debye scaling, but recent results from effective medium theory and the exact solution of mean-field models both predict...
متن کاملCalculation of positron states and annihilation in solids: A density-gradient-correction scheme.
The generalized gradient correction method for positron-electron correlation effects in solids @B. Barbiellini et al., Phys. Rev. B 51, 7341 ~1995!# is applied in several test cases. The positron lifetime, energetics, and momentum distribution of the annihilating electron-positron pairs are considered. The comparison with experiments shows systematic improvement in the predictive power of the t...
متن کاملComment on "Berry phase correction to electron density of states in solids".
Recent results of Xiao, Shi and Niu [cond-mat/0502340] on the semiclassical dynamics of an electron in a solid are related to “exotic” Galilean dynamics. The dynamics is Hamiltonian in a generalized sense and the validity of Liouville’s theorem is restored if the symplectic volume form is used.
